Congratulations Grant Curdo for taking 1st Place in '09!!! Job well done! Grant battled the wind and the rapids to come in first for his dad's inaugural memorial race. Great job and we hope to see everyone back next year for a great cause. Pete Curdo was a familiar and welcome sight on the Allegheny River. Paddling upstream and down as often as five times a week, with little regard to the weather or season, he became a landmark of sorts for passing motorists. One can imagine the surprise of onlookers seeing a boat going upstream against a strong current, or perhaps the sight of Pete navigating winter ice. Many still look to the river to see if Pete is there in his kayak. Along with the “Bruin Boys,” Pete started kayaking in the late 70’s with the intent of learning to kayak whitewater streams and rivers. The Allegheny River became Pete’s “practice pool,” providing the practice and conditioning required by whitewater. The Boys kayaked on Slippery Rock Creek, the “Yough”, the Cheat, the Gauley and the New River – the premier East Coast whitewater challenges. As the decades passed, the Allegheny was less a place to practice and condition for whitewater boating. It became the place where Pete found his center. More than just a body of moving water, the river brought with it the weather, the level and speed of the water, the fish, and the wildlife - all part of the Allegheny experience. Pete was passionate about the great river in his back yard and introduced dozens of individuals to kayaking and canoeing. Those who “knew” him from afar will miss the sight of Pete and his kayak on the Allegheny. All who have known Pete Curdo as a person will miss his outgoing personality and wit, and the smile and hello he had for everyone. |

| Upon learning of the upcoming "Pete Curdo Memorial Open Kayak Race" my heart was filled with Much Joy. I know my brother would be most honored. We had many long talks of how Pete found his Spirit and the Lord on the River. May each of the participants have a safe race. I know my brother's Spirit will forever remain on the Waters of the Allegheny River. Love, Mary Curdo |
